Two minutes, no less, no more! This is the golden rule of fillers, those files that are distributed twice an hour to listeners who are not targeted by advertising. What to put in these two minutes? How to easily create a lot of fillers? What tools should be used to make them? This is what we will see in this article.
What are the different types of fillers?
- The self-promotion
It’s like a 120-second ad for your radio and/or partners. In this sequence, you can explain the principle of your radio, recall its musical hue, the primary appointments of the grid, etc… You have 120 seconds to say everything on your radio. Promos, jingles, excerpts from the playlist titles, everything is possible.
Advantage: a great promotion to affirm the identity of your radio.
Disadvantages: risk of tiring listeners if broadcast too many times. Must only exist in the middle of many other different fillings to avoid this.
- A reworked musical title
This is the most recommended option. The idea is to reduce a track to two minutes. How to do this? Choose a route that is consistent with your antenna tone and wind it up with Audacity. You can stop it after two minutes (by a fade-out) but also completely raise it by removing the middle of the title so that the two-minute version ends as the original version. If you have difficulty making it precisely two minutes, you can very slightly modify the speed of the title in Audacity (” change Tempo ” in the ” effects ” menu), it is undetectable to the ear, and it allows you to gain (or lose) a few seconds.
Advantage: It’s quite easy to do. There are many things you can do.
Disadvantages: This forces you to “take” these tracks out of your music boxes if they are part of them to avoid duplication.
- The “recycling” of content
It is a “talk” content, a commentary, an interview that will take exactly two minutes. An excellent way to “recycle” old material that has already been broadcast. A word of advice, if you make that choice, make sure that all your content, your columns, are two minutes long from the start, so you won’t have to work on them again if you want to use them for filling.
Advantage: an excellent way to give a second life to your audio content.
Disadvantages: make sure that these contents are not dated, linked to current events, at the time of their distribution. Like self-promotion, “recycled” material can only exist in the middle of many other fillings to prevent them from repeating themselves too often.
Which tool to manufacture them?
Audacity, a free and efficient audio editing software, is the ideal tool for successful filling. For cutting, raising, accelerating, slowing down, mixing, etc… it is the perfect tool
How many do you need?
A lot! At most, there are 48 filler diffusions per 24 hours. If you only do six fillers, they will each be broadcasted on average… 8 times per day! Of course, your listeners (except the most loyal ones perhaps!) don’t listen to your radio 24/24, but if they connect every day, they may regularly hear the same fillers. Then many listeners are targeted by the advertising screens and are therefore not concerned by the issue. Nevertheless, the idea is to have, at least, about thirty fillers.
How to program them in the RadioManager?
Nothing could be more accessible, upload them into a RadioManager filler tank and choose this tank in the planning page. Attention, it is necessary to regenerate a schedule after each modification (new title added or removed, change of bin, etc…) so that this change is taken into account. Do not forget that the programming of your fillers appears in the planning.
